Review:

Buzz Berry, a lifelong skater, came up with the concept of Rhip Clip after years of hippers and being dissatisfied with the hip protection available on the market. He started working on and developing Rhip Clip in the late 80’s. Originally only the Slim was available but over the last few years, Buzz has expanded the line and now offers different sizes and thicknesses. Rhip Clip’s motto Skate, Slam, Smile…Repeat.

Let’s face it, as we get older we don’t bounce like we used to, and recovery sure takes a long time. I took a heavy slam back in June of 2024 on a 12’ vert ramp. I had a large hematoma on my left hip. It took weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside. I wanted to keep skating but knew I could not fall on that hip again. I’ve used padded shorts and other protection for snowboarding. I considered padded shorts but who wants to wear that in the summer heat? I came across Rhip Clip and chatted with Buzz. I ended up getting the Max version as it offered the most protection. It is 21mm thick. and has the widest area of coverage. They are sold individually and have various thicknesses and sizes to fit most needs.

Using Rhip Clip is incredibly straightforward. Simply slide the pad into your pants or shorts with the clip facing out, align it with your hip, and secure it to your waistband. The foam padding conforms perfectly to your leg, ensuring a snug fit.

Initially, I was concerned with how it would feel skating and moving. But, it conforms nicely and I hardly notice it. I have taken some good slams on that same hip but the Rhip Clip lived up to the billing. What would have been a session ender and time away from skating barely fazed me at all. The Rhip Clip is a staple in my skate bag now, –  better to be safe than sorry.

Overall

The experience of recovering from a fall has highlighted the importance of using adequate protection while engaging in high-impact sports like skating. The Rhip Clip has emerged as a reliable solution, offering comfort and safety without compromising mobility, even in the heat of summer. By integrating this innovative protective gear into my routine, I have continued pursuing my passion for skating more confidently, minimizing the risk of serious injury. Ultimately, the Rhip Clip serves as a reminder that it’s crucial to prioritize safety to enjoy the thrills of skating for years to come.
