Chris’ Review
I had the chance to ride with the Mad Hatter OG Skully Helmet in Matte Black this season, and it’s one of those pieces of gear that immediately stands out for how simple and well-executed it is. At a $99 price point, I wasn’t expecting this level of comfort and features, but it definitely delivers.

The first thing I noticed was how lightweight it is. Mad Hatter uses an in-mold construction that fuses the outer shell with an EPS foam liner, giving it a one-piece design that feels solid but incredibly light on your head. It’s the kind of helmet you forget you’re wearing after a few runs, which is exactly what you want for long days on the mountain.

Fit is dialed, too. I went with a size medium, and the micro-adjustable dial system makes it easy to fine-tune the fit depending on whether you’re wearing a beanie or just running it as-is. It sits low-profile, which I really appreciate — no bulky, oversized look — just clean, simple styling that works whether you’re an OG rider or not.
One of the standout features here is the Fidlock magnetic chinstrap. It’s one of those things you don’t realize you need until you have it — being able to buckle and unbuckle with one hand, even with gloves on, is a small detail that makes a big difference. The removable ear pads are also a nice touch, especially since they’re audio-chip compatible if you like riding with music. I always remove them first.

Ventilation is solid, keeps airflow consistent, and it integrates well with goggles to help prevent fogging. I had no issues pairing it with different goggles, and it worked seamlessly with Mad Hatter’s own lineup as well.
From a protection standpoint, the OG Skully checks all the boxes. It’s certified to ASTM F 2040 and CE EN 1077 Class B standards, and it features ERT (Energy Reduction Technology) built directly into the liner. What I like about ERT is that it doesn’t add bulk — it’s designed to absorb both linear and rotational impacts without the extra movement or weight you sometimes get with other systems. It’s a clean, integrated approach that you don’t notice while riding, but it’s doing its job when it matters.
What makes this helmet even more interesting is the brand behind it. Mad Hatter was started by riders who were tired of helmets all looking the same. Their whole “rider-first innovation” mindset comes through here. This isn’t just safety gear you throw on because you have to — it actually feels like part of your kit. It looks good, feels great, and doesn’t sacrifice performance to get there.
Overall Impressions
The Mad Hatter OG Skully Helmet is an easy recommendation. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and packed with features you’d expect at a higher price point. Between the clean low-profile fit, thoughtful details like the Fidlock buckle, and solid impact protection with ERT, it hits that sweet spot of performance and value. Whether you’re pairing it with Mad Hatter goggles or your current setup, this is a helmet that just works — and looks good doing it.
Dave’s Review:
Model and Rider Specs:
- Model: Mad Hatter (Classic Series) Matte Black.
- Size: Large
- Goggle Compatibility: Tested with Mad Hatter Dark Daze Goggles
- Rider Stats: 5’11” / 195 lbs
Conditions Tested: Cold morning laps and high-speed resort riding
The Mad Hatter OG Skully is a reliable, high-performance helmet that hits the mark for both comfort and protection. From the first chair to the last lap, it provides a comfortable and secure ride. It sits low on the head without feeling bulky, offering a sleek aesthetic that doesn’t compromise on safety.
The fit is the standout feature for me. The dial-fit system is intuitive, allowing for quick adjustments even with mitts on to get that perfect, snug feel. It offers a wraparound sensation that eliminates pressure points, a major win for long days on the mountain. The interior padding is plush and warm for those biting morning lifts, but it remains breathable enough to keep you from overheating during technical descents or heavy hiking. I prefer to use helmets without the ear padding; these were easily removed.

I paired this with the Mad Hatter Dark Daze goggles, and as expected, with a same-brand setup, the integration was seamless. The brim shape aligns perfectly with the goggle frame, closing the gap and preventing any forehead freeze. The ventilation channels do an excellent job of pulling air through the Dark Daze lenses; I didn’t experience any fogging issues, even during high-output riding. On the mountain, the helmet feels remarkably light, which significantly reduces neck fatigue after a full day.
At high speeds, the helmet is impressively quiet. There’s no distracting whistling from the vents, letting you stay focused on your line. While the ABS shell is rugged and clearly built for heavy-duty use, the helmet maintains a low-profile feel that doesn’t feel like a weight on your head when you’re checking your surroundings.
Overall Impressions:
The Mad Hatter OG Skully helmet is a solid choice for anyone looking for a dependable, stylish lid. It excels in providing a customized fit and works perfectly with the Dark Daze goggle shape. If you want a helmet that prioritizes a secure, comfortable feel while offering top-tier protection, this is a great addition to the kit.
Pros:
- Excellent dial-fit system for a secure, custom feel
- Seamless integration with Mad Hatter Dark Daze goggles
- Low-profile aesthetic and lightweight feel
- Fidlock® Magnetic Buckle
- Low price point
Cons:
- Ear pads are quite snug (something to consider if you wear a thick beanie)
- Venting is effective, but not adjustable on the fly
